About Guillermo Umpierrez, MD

Dr. Umpierrez is professor of medicine in the division of endocrinology at Emory University, Director of clinical research for the Emory center of Diabetes and Metabolism, Director of the Grady Memorial Hospital Clinical Research Network, Atlanta-CTSA, and Director of the diabetes and endocrinology division at Grady Health System, Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Umpierrez first joined the Emory University School of Medicine faculty in 1992. He is the recipient of numerous teaching awards including several Best Clinical Teacher and Mentor at Emory University, the J. Willis Hurst Outstanding Bedside Teacher Award from the American College of Physicians, the Outstanding Service Award for the Promotion of Endocrine Health of an Underserved Population from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and the American Diabetes Association Outstanding Physician Clinician in Diabetes Award. He is a member of the National Board of Directors for the American Diabetes Association, Endocrine Society Special Program Committee and Clinical Guideline Committee, and the American Association Clinical Endocrinologists Diabetes Scientific Council. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care Journal and the ADA Diabetes flagship reference book, Therapy for Diabetes Mellitus and Related Disorders (the "Green Book").

Dr. Umpierrez is a national and international leader in the field of hospital management of diabetes and in the mechanisms for B-cell dysfunction in African Americans with diabetes. His research program is funded by the National Institutes of Health, American Diabetes Association, and by investigator-initiated research trials. He heads the Emory Latino Diabetes Education Program, a nationally accredited Spanish Diabetes education program dedicated to providing diabetes education to Latinos in Georgia. He has published more than 200 scientific manuscripts and 30 textbook chapters, and has presented over 200 research abstracts at national and international scientific meetings.
